This morning I heard a trooper in the Olympia area inform the dispatcher that Xray 8 was in service. The dispatcher then announced it twice on the local area frequency. This seemed unusual, since normally dispatchers don't repeat to other units who is in service, especially in two separate transmissions. Does someone know if there is some significance to Xray 8, or is does it mean something special only the other troopers would know?

I believe it is an area radio tech. I have heard xray 50 in dist 5. The single digit I have not heard before

Normally X (followed by 2 digits) are radio techs. X (followed by 3 digits) are weigh masters. Example given: X31 is the tech here in Moses Lake and X885 is one of the weigh masters.

Today I heard the advisory again in the Olympia area. The unit informing dispatch is using a 71xx number, which I believe is for a cadet (they have a lot of them in the area doing legislative security duty), and she was the one who said "71xx, Olympia, X8 in service". This time the dispatcher just acknowledged without repeating it to everyone else on frequency. Seems like there is more to this than just one unit announcing a radio tech is available. After all, a radio tech would have their own radio, wouldn't they?

As others have posted -- an " X " unit is a NON-patrol Special unit. What you heard was the dispatcher responding to "X-8" and repeating the acknowledgement --- twice, first on one transmitter site and then another -- becuse she was NOT paying attention to her duties -- and didn't look to see -- on what site she was hearing " X-8 " calling. No big secret. Sometimes what you hear -- is NOT what you think you hear.

The good news is that I found out what 'X8' is.

The bad (for scanner listeners, anyway) is that I can't tell you its origin without getting into a whole mess of trouble.

mmm ok. I heard for myself tonight. 7029 advised that "x 8 " was in service, the dispatcher advised another unit which acknowledged as well. I can only guess it is someone high up, or some sort of security protocol. "1" was always the governor. I did see Chief Sandberg's "2" parked on the campus a few years back.
