Hello,

I am sort of new to scanning. Last time I had a scanner it used crystals and had 10 freq. Yes, I'm old.

I recently was fortunate enough to be gifted an new old stock Uniden BC780XLT Trunktracker III. I just had to order an antenna and a DC power supply...........it's on the way.

I know the police etc. here use trunking so I'm OK. But I see something now called digital. Is this just a method of tuning, or would I need a digital scanner in Snohomish/King counties?

If I get "into" it, I want to get a handheld for my car, etc. What handheld would you all reccomend? I like the looks and features of the new BC246T. Also, what kind of software does everyone use?

Thanks for any help,
Dave

You good to go when you get a antenna. King County still uses anlog montrola type 2. Try going to Radio Shack. I recommend the pro 97 hand held scanner. It has a lot of nice features. Snohomish just started using there trunk system.

Go with the Uniden BC246T or the BR330T for a trunking scanner. When the 800MHz trunking switchs Freqs the scanners will still work with a firmware update. Unknown about the Radio Shack Scanners will be able to do so when the time comes.

Thanks,

What about the digital freq's? Is the BCD396T worth the $ for now or the near future?

I don't have a digital scanner, but from what I hear there is not much digital around Seattle you can really recieve. Any digital on the trunked radio systems is encrypted and you won't be able to hear it anyways. The biggest digital system I know of is the Mcchord air force base TRS which is digital and I've heard you can recieve it with a 396T if you get the progamming right, but I think that's about it.
