Desktrac will eat the battery. Even if you mod it to run on 12vdc. Id suggest a Daniels repeater if battery power is an issue but be ready to fork out some bucks for a new one.

Ditto that. I just replaced a Daniels, it uses less power than my BC396XT.

We became a dealer for Codan (who bought Daniels) because of the need several of our customers had for low standby power.

These things are awesome! I like my MTR2000's otherwise and wish they still made them. I don't like the 3000's as well...

As far as store and repeat- Thats a training nightmare if you have newbies using it. But it can work with lots off patience.

The problems with using pretty much any handhelds are:
They rarely have an RX indicate "signal" available at the external mic connector, so you wind up having to make (or buy) a VOX circuit that will key the TX when a signal is heard.
And the RX selectivity on an HT is pretty bad, so they "hear" the nearby transmitter which causes the RX to go deaf (RX desense) every time the TX is keyed.
Pretty much rules out using the Baofeng type radios as their RX is so wide band that they desense from any transmitter near them.
Yeah, you might get lucky once in awhile and get something to kinda work, but that is really hit or miss.
This is EXACTLY why you don't see that many of these sort of things in the field. If it worked all that well with HT's, EVERYONE would be doing it.
Better to purpose build something that is REALLY going to work, especially if it is going 8K miles away, where test equip might not be available to troubleshoot.
I stick by the CDM750 or Maxtrac type platform. Yeah, they are not really meant for really low standby power consumption, but I can guarantee the RX is better than any HT and the TX will be cleaner also.
Any of the Motorola radios with the 16 or 20 pin accessory plug radios (Maxtrac, RADIUS, GM300, SM50/120, M1225, CDM, CM, etc) can be made into simple repeaters with very few parts.
ANYTHING you make will have some trade offs. Like TX duty cycle (heat) current draw, cost, RX and TX specification variables, etc.
I am sure the other manufacturers have similar radios that will do the same thing, just happens that I have worked on thousands of Motorola radios in the last 40 years, so that is what I am most familiar with.
I would NOT recommend going without a duplexer. You WILL be disappointed.
Again, if it worked, then everyone would be doing it.
If money is not an issue, yeah, by all means get the Daniels. There is a reason that they are pretty much the only solar radio people consider.
But, be prepared for sicker shock.
Love their stuff tho...
Pair of two ch Maxtracs probably under $150
Reject duplexer also maybe $150
16 ch accessory plugs about $7 off Ebay
One pot, one tantalum cap, couple resistors, under $10 at Radio-Shack
Coax connectors, some RG-142 from radio to duplexer maybe $30
Misc stuff, maybe another 50 to $100 depending on how fancy you want.
You can build these between $350 and $500 and have a pretty good chance of them actually working.

Problem solved.

I will post some explanatory notes tomorrow.

Or maybe a store-and-forward type repeater?

I've used those before, but they left something to be desired.

Ok, tomorrow tomorrow.

Endless weeks of 18 hour shifts is taking it's toll.

So, here's the long and short of it. I finally decided to build a self-contained simplex repeater system in the vein of the one I used to own. I ordered a cheap (kind of) Chinese UHF portable and simplex repeater off the web. Next, I went up to the attic and grabbed a Pelican case, one of my 12v solar panels, some odds and ends, an old car inverter and the soldering iron and took them down to the living room. Next, I went back up to the attic and grabbed the cordless drill I'd forgotten the first time. I siliconed the solar panel to the top of the case, and ran the wires inside of the lid. Next, I disassembled (read: broke open) the inverter and set it aside. I drilled another hole in the case for RG58 and siliconed an 8"x8" piece of sheet steel alongside the solar panel. I set aside a mag-mount UHF quarter-wave antenna to be shipped with the repeater.

I made plans to go pick up a small, motorcycle-sized gel cell battery and some random thoughts about bracketing materials I'd need. I apologized to the GF who came over at 2am and woke me asking WTF had happened to the living room?

The next morning I awoke to an email in my inbox informing me that the "radio range booster" was no longer needed since a major donor to MSF had agreed to fund the purchase of a repeater, the shipping and installation.

So I cancelled the radio and repeater orders, cleaned up the living room, stacked all the stuff in the attic and went to work. Holey Pelican cases Batman!

Then I came back home and put away that damn cordless drill.
