This a good thing? Is this Kenwood/Icom P25?

What do you want to know about it?

Kenwood calls it Nexedge (NXDN) and Icom calls it iDAS. Same FDMA thing. I wouldn't call it P25 as it's a different technology but it is digital. Competes with TRBO and not very well if you ask me.

Not a good thing for your scanner. You have to tote around a computer to listen to it.

Never used ICOM's IDAS.

I think the problems with NXDN are with the equipment rather than the technology. For instance, Moneyrolla has a TRBO repeater that will do essentially "two talk channels" in one box. With Kenwood, you'd have to buy two repeaters, one for each talk channel. We can't compete with that. :bowdown:

I know of a processing plant in Othello that is using their TRBO handhelds for monitoring and control of their equipment. Don't know much about it, just that they're doing it. AFAIK, Nexedge has no provision for monitoring and control like TRBO does. Another huge downfall for Nexedge. There have been some strides made by Kenwood to find somebody to develop that kind of stuff to get them on the same page as TRBO.

Another problem with Nexedge and TRBO alike is the inability to scan between system and non-system channels in a trunk system. Just like any trunk system (except LTR) the radio "registers" with the trunk system. When the radio scans, it can't scan the system channel, unregister, scan the simplex channel, register and then scan the system channel again and repeat the process.

One strength that Nexedge has over TRBO is that it doesn't require a repeater to keep the time slots as Nexedge is FDMA and TRBO is TDMA. If you lose the TRBO repeater and you're back to 12.5 kHz analog channels. With Nexedge if you lose the repeater you still have your 6.25 kHz digital channels, only simplex.

Honestly, I've never spent the time to play with either technology at length. We do have a 2 site 4-channel Nexedge system up here in Moses Lake for a client and they love it to pieces except for the lack of ability to scan between system channels and non-system channels. I've spent some time troubleshooting through problems they were having with it and found the issues to be with the network connection between the two sites, rather than the equipment itself.

Personally, I think analog sounds better than digital anyways. Where Kenwood needs to be spending some R&D money is with P25 equipment. They only have 1 model that will do P25 in 800 Mhz. Major disappointment. :evil:

I have a NXDN portable on Silke's big NXDN system here in Oregon and I love it! They are adding coverage all across the state area by area and its getting better than a Passport LTR system with roaming.

We were on FleetNet Passport a KEZI using TK-780 mobiles. Worked pretty darn well. Curious how it stacks up against TRBOwest.

Was just curious but are there any NexEdge systems/freqs around here? Was curious to know if DSD can decode it or not...

Wiztronics has a system up on the west side pretty much from Pierce Co to the Canadian border. Don't know any other details.

Do you know what freqs the Wiztronics NXDN sites are on?

They have a million licenses up here in Bellingham and never bother to track them down.

They have the site for the new Whatcom County fire system for one that I know of but is not NXDN.

Wiztronics appears to be using some Gil Greenwood licenses in the Port Angles area.
