So, for awhile now I've been seeing licenses for O'Reilly Auto Parts, with base/mobile station classes and what looks like NBFM and NXDN emission types, popping up for every one of their stores. Last night I was in the one not too far from my place buying some stuff and noticed that their white Ford Ranger truck fleet outside had UHF antennas mounted on them. Closer inspection revealed a hand microphone hanging from the dashboard, but the actual mobile radio was covered with food wrappers, reciepts and other assorted floor detritus.

I'm going to set up my recording program on the local store's licensed freq, but was wondering if anyone knew anything about them?

WQLS404, linked above, which contain FB and MO licenses for stores in Puyallup and Lakewood, and every other license in King County each have one Control Point: 233 S PATTERSON, GREENE, SPRINGFIELD, MO which is one of O'Reilly's distribution centers.

I punched in a bunch of them. If I get more than a couple, I'm sending them to your bandpass filter.

This is from a my friend who works at a O'Reilly store in California:

"Our systems are indeed a simplex. They have a reasonable range on them, but I'm unsure of the wattage. Our operators are not individually licensed, but we do have protocols we must follow, which vary with each location. I know for a fact that the radios in our units are operable out to a 25 mile radius from our store. I do not know much of our radios since I'm more of manager on the retail side, but I can definitely scratch up some details and some photographs of our units if so desired."

Recorder caught 2 snatches of more NXDN noise around 1408hrs today. Sounded like a quick q/a. No follow-up, as Multicare (another recorder project) started yapping around that time.

If by "system" you mean two simplex radios then not necessarily no. I imagine the purpose of this system is for the guy at the store to communicate with the guy that's running parts out to the local auto shops. And since the shop calls the store on the phone and places an order before the truck leaves the store, I doubt there's much traffic between the store and the truck once the truck has left the parking lot. The truck probably carries little, if any, inventory, so the most exciting thing heard might be "Hey Bob can you stop for coffee?"

It's a system, nonetheless, in a sense, sort of, kind of, not really. Just like those little red radios you've grown so fond of...

Yes, a "system" can be as little as a "Base and One"
