for laptop in the car I use Network Stumbler coupling 802.11 to GPS.... or
Boingo (Adware) has a cheesy yet effective WiFi sniffer. PCTel also has a cool software that has a 30 day trial on it.

for winCE devices I think PocketBoigo is OK.. but PocketWarrier is the king for me.

I picked up a Wifi network at 60Mph on the highway called "Landrover" one time.. preaty interesting :)

Does Net Stumbler require a certain card or will it work with any?

While driving down I-5 Between I-16 and Gravelly Lake Dr. I nabbed 27 unsecured networks using Net Stumbler with a regular pcmcia Linksys card. I never would have thought I would get that many without an external antenna (Might try the ol' pringles can someday.)

I pulled over in Lakewood and changed my SSID and surfed for a while.

I am noticing a very strong peer Network in Tacoma. I even get it at my house but can't connect. I heard a rumor that Tacoma is going for "most unwired city" also.

I'm a Mac guy what's "changed my SSID and surfed for a while" ? For Mac'ers there is iStumbler, but the best is MacStumbler - both avilable at VersionTracker.

SSID= service set identifier. Basically tells the wireless router what computers belong to that specific network. Helps if more than one wireless network is being picked up by your wireless cards.

350 + Networks on my travels in the last 2 days. A good portion of them were open.

Rich,

Can we add a database with lat/long for open networks ?

My last trip to Spokane I stumbled across a bunch of unsecure networks.
Downtown Spokane has a city operated cloud, provided 2 free hours with an email account. A few more unsecured on the south side of I-90 on South hill.
The local hotels offered a wi-fi connection.
Airway Height has an open cloud but I could'nt connect for some reason.
This was with the built in b/g, no externel antenna.
I understand Hermiston, ORE has a huge cloud that's open and free.

Sure. I can probably add map plotting as well. Its easy to do dynamic plots but it requires keeping a huge map reference on the server. In worse case I can always link off to google maps or mapquest.

My parents have a condo on N 35th in freemont on the 4th floor. As I walk up and down the outside hall I usually pick up 20-30 and some nights no open system. My brother had a rental in a Richland neighborhood and he has 3 open systems to choose from (one story house!).

On another subject at the Freemont site I'm always able to connect to 2 or 3 systems - but the wireless router is not connected to the net.

also interesting was at one of the open sites I was able to connect and reconfigure the router - which I didn't - lucky for them I'm older than 20...
