461.7000 100hz - nonstop beeping for a few minutes. Heard a voice begin to speak, then the beeping started again. Color me puzzled. :?

Your description sounds like a phone patch with privacy turned on. Where are you hearing this?

There's another frequency associated with it too (most likely).
Try the input @ +5mhz.

I'm hearing it in Bellevue. Listened to the input, but didn't hear anything.

This is the best existing example I can send you to listen to- The Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department has 'never' allowed units to talk to one another on dispatch frequencies except for emergencies when they 'patch' the audio.

This would not tell you who you are hearing but at least it is a bit of intel you can leverage in figuring it out.

LASD Don't ask me why, I don't know for sure. knowing cops, it was probably for expressing themselves on the air and/or predates repeaters to keep nultiple units from keying up at the same time.

My point is that the way that LASD prevents units from talking is the use of this channel marker beep tone which is the same basic concept as the phone patch privacy tone. You might want to look up an audio feed of the LASD and listen for the beeping (mobile talking) and the dispatcher.

If you find one, does that sound similar to the type and function of what you are hearing?

Nothing in the FCC GENMEN leaps out at me either. there is a radio provider in Issaquah not licensed for Phone patch (would not stop many that I know especially on a temporary basis).

Various cab companies in Seattle did this on their 152.xxx and 452.xxx frequencies. You could always hear the dispatchers but they didn't patch through the audio from the mobiles. I'm sure it would have been entertaining if the mobiles were able to hear each other.

Mike, the beeping is very rapid and will slow down, then stop- only to start again. I've noticed a few words would get out, then the beeping would start again. I've heard the LASD system on some old episodes of COPS, which IIRC, was slow and at regular intervals.

I'm going to set up a second receiver on the input. I'll hopefully get some good recordings that way.

Interesting, can you post a sample in the interim?

Have you ever heard Transcrypt scrambling?

http://www.efjohnsontechnologies.com/pr ... io_samples

400/413 has a clicky/beepy quality that varies with the tempo of the users voice but you can hear voice under the noise. Shot in the dark.

Interested. Let me know if I can be of less assistance;)

Please advise what you come up with.....I am way out of position to assist here in Spoklahoma.

I always welcome any assistance. And thank you for the help so far. :D

Managed to get some samples of it- sadly, I had the scanner turned down pretty low so you'll need to boost the volume. Fixed the volume level this afternoon so I should have some better recordings waiting this evening.

I should add that these were recorded on the repeater output of 461.700. I'll set up a scanner on the input tomorrow.

I seem to remember that the Zetron 38A had a setting to beep like that on a setting of "Reserved PL Tone".

Ive seen guys use it to chase off other users that show up unlicensed on a frequency.

In fact... Ive seen coordinators that think they wont cause any problems to other licensee's by licensing the input to your repeater to someone well in range of your repeater as a simplex channel. Id almost bet that someone is using the Zetron feature to monitor for this type of interference.

Cannot believe I forgot about that feature, you have advanced a most plausible theory.

Thanks for the insight! Hadn't heard of that feature before. Hopefully my input frequency monitoring will yield some results tomorrow.

Well I brought one scanner to work with me this morning. I noted hit times of some beeping instances and what would you know- some matching data! I colored the odd PL tone of 127.3hz in Red. Based on the timestamp and my records, the Zetron PL feature looks like the winner. :!:
