Dumb question here. I've never updated from one operating system to another (going to go from Vista to 7) without repeated calls to a help desk, live chat with IT geeks, crying, gnashing of teeth, and eventually a federal subpoena.

How hard is it, and do I have to back up EVERYTHING?

Not very and yes.

I will recommend that if you dont want to deal with a pain in the ass buy a new hard disk and install new OS on it, then put your old hard disk in the computer so you can reference it when you want..

dont upgrade "in place" save you a lot of shit in the future.

I think it's a laptop; would have to be an external.

Just back up your critical documents, critical emails, spreadsheets, pictures/videos/music, etc. It's a good idea to copy your web browser shortcuts too -- just in case. The upgrade should work just fine, however.

Or you could come to Yakima on your next excursion and I could perform the upgrade for you and save you some jail time.

I still recommend the hard disk trick laptop or whatever.. disks are cheap

or find anyone on here who can assist you (if you can find me as well I can get you a backup of your disk real nice) I can also make you a forensic image if you would like to use it in court :) ha

I just did this to my laptop that I got from costco last year put the disk in upgraded to 7 and everything went fine,I do keep everything and I mean everything backedup on a external hard drive a portable Seagate

I have some WIN95 disks laying around somewhere, let me know when you get stuck.

Yes, install 7 on a new- bigger- hard drive. There may be compatibilty issues with your old programs. I lost the use of two programs. Fortunately I have an older laptop with Windows XP as well- so I get to use my older stuff and still enjoy the new. If your laptop is within 2 years prior to Windows 7 then the hardware should work even better. 7 runs on 4 GB ram the best. 1 GB will be used for the system and the rest for your activities.
