one digital mode I want to play with is watching airplane data and tracking it with out the web, anyone have any software they can point me in the direction of or tips on where to get started with this? free and opensource ideal dont like to pay for tinkering

cool and 131.55 FM is a good freq?

it is end of day but figured I would find more packets out there.. havent heard anything for about 30 min heard one packet before i got the software up and running of course

For Seattle, 131.55 is a goldmine; however check out the other channels; not everyone uses 131.55. However, last time I monitored 131.55 in Seattle, I was bombarded with Alaska Airlines and Horizon flights.

Im ok with anything as long as its a clear decode. I will have to check it out in the morning again when there is more air traffic. I have nothing after 4 hours of running it ..haven't heard packets either. I have 100% copy on all other air-traffic so assume I should get clear on this as well

Anything FlightAware can't do?

cool I thought most flight stuff was AM that would explain why I heard squelch breaks all the time but no decipherable data that should put me on track!

@taco yea that is the same thing, I just want to decode it my self. when I am out traveling its fun to have something new to watch. (and be independent of the internet) also just one of those decodable modes that I just havent decoded yet so wanted to put it under my belt now that I know this is AM I should be OK on the RX and just WXFax I have not mastered yet

update:yahoo! AM and a 10k filter on bandwidth and the packets are blasting in like mad this application is spiffy I like the photo's of the aircraft that is fun

any other cool data I can look at with this application? looks like just aircraft type and sometimes flight plan. I thought there was fun data like need extra soda and stuff like that

update2: I just didnt wait for the fun messages now I see them! this is rad thanks for the assistance in the startup! I think when I let this run for a day I am going to have a incredible amount of data

Yeah, the free form messages can be hilarious; I have a little collection of some hilarious finds. I dunno how close you are to SeaTac, but if you are you can probably hear the ARNIC base station so you can see both sides of the conversation. I can hear the PDX one here about 20 miles away with mountains in between.

nice I will watch for the funnies I should have a clear signal for seatac and renton as I am up the hill and within 20 miles almost clear shot from each (I can see out and in data of some sort uplink data)

I did see some fun ones about birds

also some some good ones about engine data that were fun to read

Also, Boeing runs ACARS on all aircraft they they test, so watch out for that.
