Really? Three times? At 2:45AM in the morning? Could that be true? I thought certain talkgroups were supposed to have priority on the system?
Sort of....it probably had less to do with priority levels. The bonk he probably got was a type of "out of range" tone, not necessarily a "system busy" tone. Depending on his positioning around the car, buildings, if he was moving around obstacles quickly, if his antenna was buried in his armpit....the control channel signal could have been briefly screwed up...or the talk-request signal from his portable could have been screwed up. The radio will "bonk" if there's some corruption in the data stream, or if the perceived signal at the radio isn't "good enough".
It's a bit more technical than that....Wiz or Sean may elaborate on it better....
I've experienced it many times....usually daily. It's just how the system is. When not under stress, it's not too difficult to fix (by moving around, repositioning antennas...).
When you're getting ready for a gun battle, it's a bit more complicated - and unwelcome.
