Another option could be to run the voip box behind the router. That was one reason for the HyperWRT firmware - to QOS outbound traffic, though you might have to poke a hole for the voip box if it can't do outbound polling for incoming calls. Either way this is much cleaner than double-natting.

I'll attempt plugging the voip into the router, router into modem.
Per echolinks website, "v.2 solves wi-fi issues".
I didn't think about double natted.

If you like to tinker pull out an old computer, install a couple nic's and install pfSense

Use the wireless as an access point.

Ive got a pfSense box running between my web server, email server, VOIPo phone numbers and all the web browsing that goes on here...

It gives you much more control in a port forwarded environment.

All I have right now is an Asus netbook and an older Toshiba laptop which I let my teenage daughter abuse, uh, I mean use.
Donated away the big boxes.
I'll keep messing with Echolink just for the challenge, but I'm rather inactive on Ham radio.

double NAT should be no issues at all you just need to make sure your firewalls the whole way are inbound port forwarding to your echolink system

so make sure your (example) comcast modem firewall is OFF (best case) then just port foward from the linksys this might mean you run PPPoE on the linksys and turn it off on the ISP router.

If you cant shut off the ISP firewall dump the linksys or go transparent with it. As mentioned DDWRT makes it more like a real firewall and less like linksys-crap. but caution as mentioned you will brick a newer linksys as they dont let you have as much fun on new.

Or use PFSence or Mono Wall and a old PC it will do everything.

just poking but I like that echo link and ham radio are separate, as we all know echo link isnt ham radio :) HIHI

wow old thread revival

btw no vendor makes truly "secure" wireless gear, no net-gear sure as hell didnt invent anything that can keep me out

its all in how you implement the security on the client

the only true security is when you put your packets into a IPSEC tunnel on the wireless

wpa2 with a real long ass password is as good as you get with just a home router and nothing more.
