: : Help! I'm interested in buying a handheld scanner and from
: : what I've found on the net, I've narrowed my choices to
: : either the PRO 26, AOR 8000, or the Icom R-10. I'm mainly
: : interested in the VHF and UHF freqs. so would the PRO 26
: : be my best choice? Computer control would be interesting
: : too. Is this possible with the PRO 26? Is the PRO 26
: : modifyable for the cell freqs without too much hassle?
: : I've seen several web pages say it can't be done and a few
: : that say it can. Can someone tell me yes or no? Also,
: : where is a good dealer for the AOR and the best price?
: : I'm new to the scanning scene, so any info. would be
: : greatly appreciated.

: the pro-26 are easily modificate!!! it work good, but not very sensitive. Also don't buy ar800 or ic-r10... they are receivers... not scanner... they don't search quickly!!!!!!

I purchased two Pro-26's with the intent to use one for now and save the other for later. There will most likely be no more scanners made with such a range again. They are modifiable if that was something that was interesting to you. They have a good reception and are very easily used. A very well made product. Radio Shack is known for coming out with very unique products on occasion and this one is in that catagory. They were the first to offer a "Walkman" sized stereo recorder with a PLL tuner. I have one of those as well and couldn't be happier. Another product that you're not likely to see anyone reproduce anytime soon.
