My, Oh my! What a wonderful difference!
After powering down EVERYTHING except the 780, the "birdie" disappeared. The offending piece of equipment was isolated to the "scanner" [read as: HP ScanJet 5200C] that makes a wonderful platform for the 780 while I'm at the computer table.
Actually, I believe there was a whole lot more white noise on other channels that I attributed to using only the telescoping antenna. It seems now, with the "scanner" unplugged that my signal strength with the rod almost equals the discone that I use on a nearby BC9000.
