Think of the trunk system in this way...Its a like a computer network. the cops have a wireless modem in their radio that connects them to the network. But like we all do when we log on to the net...we have to give a user name. In this case the county agencies use Talk Group IDS to specify who they are to the network. Thats where the similarities with internet end. Now the system only connects those with similar IDS to "chat" or talk within this same talkgroup ID. Your trunker has a passive modem in it that simply monitors the system. The data channel you defined initially is what your radio utilizes to match the frequency jumps, as ID's switch frequencies throughout the system. The system is setup this way (Much Like the Net) so that hundreds of agencies can have access to each other, and that fewer resources are used. I am so long winded but i hope this helps dude.
