Maybe its a sign to read the manual. Memory backup on the 2046 is rated at 14 days. I don't remember what powers the 2046 backup, but it will probably be a 9-volt battery, an internal button-battery (which usually crap-out after a few years), or one of those PC-mount 1-farad capacitors. Unplug the thing for a couple of weeks and attack it with a voltmeter.
