I am near SeaTac Mall in Federal Way. From here, I can barely pick up clearance delivery, ground, and tower. With stock antennas, I have a PRO-71, -94, and -2050. I can only pick up SeaTac with the -71.

: Where in auburn? I'm near Casino. I can pick up all the planes talking to the ground, and sometimes both ends, but rarely. and of all my scanners the pro-60 is about the best of the bunch and I have a pro-2006, 2020, 2023, 2057, 2066, 46,60 and a bc245xlt. nothing special for anteni..

It seems I'm only hearing one side of the conversation (the aircraft side)on 119.5 119.9 etc. But when it comes to the planes in flight I can hear both sides of conversation, as long as they arent on final approach.do the planes in contact with sea-tac hear a response on a different freq? : : : This is because the air traffic controllers sometimes control multiple zones by simulcasting 2 or 3 freqs at the same time. One negative effect of this is extraneous voice traffic coming out on the other zone freqs. Also keep in mind that the ground transmitters are not intended for terrestrial reception so often times you'll have to be at a good location with a good antenna to hear the transmitters used for the tower or final approach.

: : Rich is correct, but in some conditions, you can receive controllers from many more miles away than they are supposed to transmit. For example, my PRO-71 can pick up Seattle Clearance Delivery (128.00) from my bedroom in Auburn(!), but nowhere else in the house. Clearance Delivery is supposed to transmit in a 5nm radius. As for the sectors, you pretty much have to be in the sector that you want to monitor if you want to pick up the controller side.
