Nextel is an SMR, and there's a good explanation of that trunking term in Police Call (available at Radio Shack). I'll let you read all the details in Police Call, but basically (and roughly), think of two types of trunking systems:

1) FCC regs basically say if you want your own trunking system, you have to have a minimum of something like 300-350 mobile units per freq AND a minimum of 5 freqs so multiplication of those numbers will show you how big a system has to be in order to convince the FCC to grant you a license for a dedicated trunking system.

2) the other trunking system is SMR, and so Nextel holds these licenses. They then 'lease' time on their system to lots of businesses. That's the big difference between the two types.

Nextel offers several services with one radio on their system:

-- you can make telephone calls (like cellular service)
-- you can make Private Calls so you and someone within your company can talk like a normal two-way radio conversation just between the two of you AND,
-- you can make Group calls to all other employees within your company...this is the Talkgroup concept on our public agency trunking system...

And, Nextel has different charges for each of these services...

: : Nextel is a cell phone/2 way radio company. Their cell phones double as 2 way radios. Companies would sign up with Nextel, give their employees the phones, then every person in the company can instantly "call" any other person in that company that has a phone with the touch of a button. The conversation would be just like 2 people using portable radios, but with alot better range.

: : : Hey Guy's iv Noticed that in the FCC data base That Nextel has 'Lic' 'apl' all over the state waht dose nextel do ???? are they some kinda holding co for radio freq's

: Thank's
