A "sally-port" consists of two automatic gates that are interlocked electrically. One of the two gates must be closed at all times; for example in order to unlock the inside gate, the outside gate must be closed or vice versa.

The purpose of a sally port is to prevent a person (prisoner) from running in or out of a controlled area. The normal procedure is:

1. Patrol car arrives at the outside gate and radios for the gate to be opened.

2. Outside gate is opened and patrol car drives into space between gates. Outside gate is then closed behind patrol car.

3. When outside gate is fully closed, inside gate is opened, allowing patrol car to drive into facility.

Reverse procedure is used to exit.

: Can some one here tell me what a sally port is, and why it is called this?
