So I have recently come across that Wa Ferries are switching from Motorola APX's to Taits. I know they were using APX6000's, but they are in the process of "upgrading"? I'm not sure which portable to be exact, but it looks like either the Tait TP9600 or TP9800. My questions are 1, does anyone know what the big difference is between the two, besides the brand and multi-band options? 2, does that mean they are switching frequencies, going trunked and/or digital? And 3, does anyone know where the APX's are going? Thanks.

In my opinion, it means absolutely nothing. They're P25 radios which the WSDOT trunk system supports.

You need to figure out which portable they are using first. The 9600 is a single band radio. The 9800 is a 4-band radio (including 900 meg but that requires a 900 meg antenna.) They're likely cheaper (and possibly) more readily available than the APX radios.

The 9800 model makes a bit more sense, because they could have VHF Marine channels and WSDOT trunk access in one radio. They could also interop with USCG on P25 if necessary.
