Looks like someone had a meeting about safety and figured they might need radios...

Looks like someone had another meeting and figured that they didn't need them anymore...Or decided they needed to upgraded to be safer

I would say that was a BearCom sale. Same repeater and antenna is on roof of Sacred Heart in Spokane, which interestingly enough has a NXDN system. Security is dispatched out of Portland and radios are all MotoTRBO and they hate them.

Why did they hate them?

Because they're not made by Kenwood?

I would say Day Wireless is a couple blocks away.
The Federal Detention Center is even closer but they're still using their UHF P25 trunked system.

Easy there fonz...I understand that Sacred Heart is extremely difficult to cover with one site, yet BearCom sold them 1 repeater and a mediocre antenna. I believe there is a low power site in the basement as a fill in. Half of that building is built into the side of the hill.

The VA in Seattle used to have a scattering of yagis on the roof pointed downward to help fill in areas of the complex that couldn't get covered otherwise.

Hasn't anyone heard of Radiax leaky cable. The Rainer Bank building uses a single repeater and leaky cable down an elevator shaft down to the underground levels with an antenna in the basement and a single outside antenna on the roof. Works great with 2 watt portables any where in the building or downtown area. At least it did years ago.

Last year I suggested running ethernet cables down the elevator shaft in a 25 year old building to the CCTV guy. He said that was against code :/

It absolutely is.

Variances can be (and are) granted in specific cases. Most cases I've worked with required cables in elevator shafts to be contained within conduit

The only exception I have seen to that is leaky coax, for obvious reasons.

Try mounting ANYTHING that is not a part of an elevator / elevator controls in an elevator machine room ....

Yes - correct. They have fire proof Radiax leaky cable that does meet all local and national fire and building codes. (That is what we used) But I have no idea about internet type cable. I would think that there must be some type of telephone / ethernet cable that is fireproof and meets code.

"Back in the stone age" when Seattle Police & Fire were on UHF -- it was hit or miss on radio coverage - from inside some of the buildings in the downtown area. It all was a matter of "how" and "what" the building was made of. When 800 MHz came along -- they still had some problems -- but a lot less "inside" building communications problems and better radio signal levels all around the downtown area and all through the newer and taller buildings all over the city.

The old Ozark Hotel fire back in the 1970's made everyone in the city of Seattle as well as the entire US of A -- sit up - and take notice of the need to make new laws and new needed safety products to protect everyone from needless fires such as the Ozark Hotel.

When you check into a hotel on your next vacation trip somewhere - and your hotel room has a Fire Detector in it - it is because of the Ozark Hotel fire and the City of Seattle Fire codes.

I turn the soapbox over to someone else now. MTM

Thus, I spend a great part of my day with my face buried in iBwave, designing DAS in hopes of making a difference. Yes, just like Michael Knight, but without the cheese, and the talking car. When it comes to in-building signal reinforcement, the NFPA and IFC guidelines typically rule.. Although the ego of the AHJ ends the day.
