Lots of activity today! Several voice frequencies are active in the 217 range. I think they're using 6.25khz steps... my 396XT wasn't picking up the voice in AUTO step mode. I had to manually put in 6.25khz steps for it to lock on...

Channels active from Bellevue:

217.70625
217.91875 (West dispatch?)
217.96875 (Central dispatch?)

Seems like the voice channels all use 146.2 PL

"2767 from South 2" heard on voice channels 217.5562 and 5062. They did give their road location. Previous VHF is completely silent down here.

Jim, can you set your scanner to 6.25khz steps? It's hard to guess what frequency you're actually on...

I'm looking at my 396XT to find the strongest signal... that's how I'm verifying the actual frequency. With 6.25khz steps, there are usually two frequencies that sound the same... but their signal level will tell you which is the real output.

Thanks!

I was using a pro-97 so I don't know the exact freq but I can hear them clearly. I will have to try with a different scanner next time. Things have quieted down now and not as much traffic as when the wind was causing outages.

Sure -- no problem... it would be nice if the FCC would force them to make assigned frequencies but they don't have to it seems... they get total freedom apparently...

If you can get Trunkview working in your area then please help to fill in the missing SiteIDs/Frequencies, etc.

Be sure to set up the Site first using the information above.

So how do we come up with talkgroups?

Well there are no traditional talkgroups -- just channels. I believe the voice channels are not static -- meaning they rotate. They're not assigned to a specific city. They might be based on region though. It seemed like 217.70625 was more/less the Eastside. I just heard a new one tonight 217.98125 that sounded like Tacoma/Normandy Park area. I haven't confirmed this theory yet.

If you have a scanner with 6.25 steps, then just scan the 217-218 band for the repeater sites in your area. You can input the site audio to your computer's Line-In jack and Trunkview can give you the extraneous information.

The thing is for every site you can hit, you need to go to OPTIONS -> Enter Sites Database. Input the site information and then it'll calculate the info. Let it scan and you'll hear a BEEP through speaker when a voice channel is detected. It'll give you the frequency of the voice channel. Do this for all the sites you can monitor.

Example:

Name: PSE 81875
ID: 50B1
Control Channel: 217.81875 Mhz
Base frequency: 217.0 Mhz
Step: 6.25 khz

After several hits, you can hit F8 and it'll show you the statistics page and you can see how channels are linked, etc.

There's a 'control' function if you have a supported scanner model. I presume this is so the software can scan the sites and then monitor for voice activity. Then it can build a "complete" map of the system and voice channels.

Trunkview is here: http://www.linato.net/trunkview/
