The only large fire around that time that I can remember was the Seattle Cedar Manufacturing plant fire in Ballard ion May 20, 1958.

I found this timeline on one of the UW websites:

http://www.washington.edu/emergency/uw- ... 49-present

There is a big jump from 1949 to 1961 so I'm guessing there is a lack of information for those years. A place as big as the UW (even in the 50s) has stuff going on all the time.

The fires listed there are the ones from the late 60s/early 70s plus the fire at the Urban Horticulture building in 2001,

4 buildings were destroyed in a fire that began shortly before midnight, April 1, 1961.

SFD History: 1946-1963.

Those of you with Seattle Public Library cards can see the Seattle Times Historical Archives (1900 - 1984) for free.

Coverage of the fire is in the April 1, 1961 edition on Page 1, 2, and 3.

Sorry for following up on my own post but it is pretty amazing that the UW's own emergency record did not have information on that fire. I'm guessing it happened in the area where the Physical Plant offices and the Faculty Club are now.
