New scanner guy needs advice on best scanners under $150
I would be using it to get police & fire info for freelance work.
I am in the country. Do I need digital? Thanks!

Where are you located? try looking for a Radio Shack pro-97. most likely can be found on Ebay or possibly sometimes on Craigslist or at select Radio Shack stores. it is an older model but works fine for scanning around the sound area.

I've had good luck in the past buying scanners from EBAY. i guess you take your chances as with buying anything on-line radio related like that. I've also had good luck buying from private parties on Craigslist as far as scanners go. Just with anything "web" related and purchases just using your head and if something seems to good to be true it probably is.

If you want to go another $50 you can get a Uniden 346xt hand held, or a Uniden BCT 15X mobile radio. There's a number of free and $$ software programs that support that line of scanners, so no lack of control.

There's not much digital yet in W.WA, so as of now I don't find that a problem. I'm in Sno Cnty and have the above radios. There's tons of stuff to listen too, so I'm not doubting my choice in scanners.

I can't vouch for anything off there, but looks to be some solid info. I'd rather buy new and have the warranty, but YMMV. Good luck.

That's odd, it seems to me nearly half of what I'm listening to here in Pierce county is digital. Bonney Lake, Tacoma and it's rumored Puyallup soon.

Add into that most military stuff, federal stuff, the Pierce transit trunked system...
