Anything new with the Chemical Depot? I'm going to Boise in a couple of weeks and am looking for anything new or exciting to monitor on the way there.

Any other recommendations? I'm going thru Umatilla, Union and Baker counties.

They're done with the burning. Not sure if the security is what it once was. I haven't heard anything when I've been over there. The last emergency drill over the tone alert radios was April 2011.

I drove by there last August and I managed to catch some security traffic. That was with my handheld 396XT. This time, I'll have my 996XT with a much better antenna. I'm hoping to catch quite a bit more traffic.

Yep it's 400mhz P25 but the audio was in the clear -- at least when I was there. Activity was quite low though. I think I was picking up guard patrols and a supervisor.

Nick, I can confirm that the Umatilla Army Depot system is still alive and well. I heard some traffic this afternoon as I passed through the area. About 4 active talk groups were heard, no encryption.

It certainly different now that 10 years ago, when they had armed HMMWV's patrolling the fence lines...

Chris,

I passed through tonight on the way down to Boise. I only heard two TGIDs -- 48 and 57600. There was voice on 48 but very limited. The 57600 was odd and it had some kind of data signal on it.

Activity was quite low. I passed through between 3-4pm.

So I'm heading back over to Boise in early June. Any updates?

Chris, I discovered that the Army Depot radio system is offline. I got no signals -- nothing. I pulled over on a nearby overpass and sat for a few minutes -- scanning all possibilities. Didn't hear anything new...

I wonder if UAD was part of the sequester cuts..?

I started thinking they could have joined the Umatilla MOT2 system... but didn't hear anything obvious there...

I have't read anything for sure, but it was assumed that at some point the Army was going to pull out of the Depot completely. I would guess that when the disposal part of the cleanup was finished, all the hardware would come out as well.

It's definitely kaput. Nothing at all when coming back.

When I was there the plan was to turn the land back over to the local Native Americans.
It could make a nifty housing development, the igloo's* stay relatively cool in the summer.

Here's a tidbit of information (in case you're on Jeopardy):
There are 1000 out of 1001 original igloos* there. A crater and a cross is the only thing left from an ammo explosion accident which disintegrated one & killed 4 or 5 workers in the 1940's.
There's also a small herd of antelope on the 20,000 acre depot.

* 'Igloo' is the local terminology referring to the ammo bunkers.

I always wondered how you were able to get so much antelope meat out of season...

That sounds like a special draw hunt. I'd like to do it!

The Texas Guard unit was a source of internal humor (with exception of the soldier killed).

Humvee tracks over igloos, rolled humvees, burnt to the ground humvees, dead (shot) coyotes  , UCMJ type NCO's.
Ever do a T/stop on a vehicle with an occupied gun nest? MP fun that place was...
