So instead of calling *611 and asking them, Wilrobnson called me and asked why his DynaTAC 8000x always switches to 1X mode during a call and back to EVDO (3G) after. My theory was that Verizon uses their 800 channels (1X) for voice only and 1900 (3G/EVDO) for data only. And apparently dual band phones can only use one radio at a time, whereas tri band (the third being 4G/LTE/700 MHz) can use two at a time. |

I didn't get lost, it's just the conversation was much more interesting than anything in Renton. I made it home without needing to consult a map or GPS and as a bonus I got to go over I-90 floating bridge and the view was worth it. |

Imagine the irony of running a G.711u or G.711.1 IP call over a cellphone, you would probably have a better sounding call than if you made a normal cellphone call. This is one thing the under-30 crowd didn't have much opportunity to experience; the days when landline telephone calls were full DS0 over TDM end to end and cellphones were wideband analog AMPS. Phones back then had clean 300-3000+ bandwidth without noticeable latency or artifacting. Those old phones sounded so good that you could actually understand the person on the other end. These days every other word on my phone calls are "what?" or "say again?", and it sure isn't attributed to deafness on my part... |

I used to call someone using an AMPS bag-phone up until 2005 to their Nex***. Guess whose calls never dropped? |

Vonage was (is?) running a deal where you could use their servers to make VOIP calls over the phone. Doesn't use any minutes and I've gotten quite a few complaints about call quality. They seem to be doing ANI spoofing and won't let me *67 any numbers. |

I'm 26 but I barely remember that era....I remember talking to relatives on the phone around age 4 or 5 in 1989-1990 which was what, 6 years after the Bell System was broken up and it sounding totally different. I would say around 1996 is when things started sounding different for sure. |
