Has anyone tried powering one directly from a 12V source? Can you charge one from a car battery or a solar panel (w/o dc-dc heat generator)?

I don't see why not.
12 volt 3 amps positive tip.
The battery should 'clean up' any surge.

I HAVE A PHILLIPS WITH HDMI I USE WITH MY DELL INSPERON MINI LINUX
. PHILLIPS IS 19PFL3504D/F.

IT WILL SUPPORT HDMI AND PC VGA/SVGA.
