While waiting for someone to get their Dr appt done at St. Joes on the upper deck of the parking structure, I fired up my ham radio, yaesu ft-7900r w/ diamond hb7700 antenna, and was surprised to pull in so many local airports control towers & ATIS systems. Really made the time pass fast. https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=zSKaDWjRXSs0.kSKjyQXS3X1Q |

Hi Dan, yeah, I think it's safe to say you were in an ideal location. Being close to the water may have helped slightly as well. This area has so many hills that it's easy to get trapped in a low spot and thus block any effective listening. With my 996XT in the car and its wideband whip, I can pick up quite a bit of aviation activity by scanning the local frequencies. It reminds me of the times when I could freely go to BFI and sit in the parking lot near the fence-line. It is such a different experience being there than listening from a distance. Just so much more to hear if you're within that 1/4 mile range. :) |
