I just ordered one of these but these are very popular right now. If you can swing the $28 pick one up.

Combine this with DSD for Windows and you decode P25, X2-TDMA, MotoTRBO, etc.

Will post screenshots when I get it (probably this weekend.)

How are you getting audio in to DSD?

Well, I have an Asus Xonar soundcard... and the WAVE device pipes it anywhere I select. (i.e. it has a WAVE output and a WAVE input.)

If you don't have that kind of soundcard (I think only Asus and Creative provide the WAVE device -- my on-board Realtek does not) ... then you can use VAC (Virtual Audio Cable.)

http://software.muzychenko.net/eng/vac.htm

VAC is nice and you can try it out free -- but read about the demo limitations. You'll need to buy the full version. It's not that expensive and works really well if you don't have the above soundcard(s).

The Asus Xonar soundcard is very nice though. Highly recommend over an on-board audio chipset.

Here's a cool video of pager decoding using the RTL-SDR and PDW:

Here's an example of P25 decoding with DSD:

This is kind of funny. A speed-trap...

FYI, in case anyone is interested to know, I picked up the latest generation of these RTL SDRs using the R820T chipset. Compared to the first generation (E4000) chipset, the difference is night and day. Much better gain and sensitivity than the older generation.

The best part is that they're still very cheap. I got mine in 2 days for $22 shipped.

The stock antenna is garbage but it does sort of work. I just cut the cord at the antenna base and added a PL259. Plug that into my external R/S discone antenna and it works like a champ.

The SDR# software has improved greatly too -- so it's the perfect compliment to the cheap SDR -- as it's free software. :)

Funny. I was just thinking last night that I wanted to find this tread again and try it out with PDW.

Can you post a picture of the antenna connection mod you did?

Thanks.

Not really, because all you'll just see is a PL259 connector. Just cut, strip and solder. It's not very difficult. :)

There are several adapters you can get too if you'd rather go that way. MCX to F, MCX to BNC, MCX to PAL, etc.

Ahh crap. I was looking at the wrong Ebay link.
I see the more recent link has a picture of the antenna w/ cable along with connector details.

Want to make sure this is the correct link. You mentioned 22 bucks, but the price in the Ebay link is $14.99 Free Shipping.

if you look at the sales history it used to be $17. Add on $5.00 for Priority shipping and you get $22. Note that this is a waste of money because Priority is the exact same speed as First Class. Unless you get one of those parcel consolidators like SmartPost in which case Priority would be faster, but I have ordered from the seller in the past and he do not use those.
