Have not been able to find an answer to this question, but what exactly is SFD's "Staff 10" unit?

Based on calls I've heard it must be some sort of command unit, but what is it's role/hierarchy in the department compared to a battalion or deputy chief?

Thanks for any info.

I believe they coordinate staffing each day throughout the city, i.e. shift people around when people call in sick, get people back in on OT, that sort of thing. Way back when when Battalion 1 was in existence they had a driver. Then Battalion 1 went away, but the driver remained and became Staff 10. I think on the fireground they act as the IC's assistant.

I gather that he/she is in charge of the accountability board and keeps track of where the FFs are working. (educated guess only)

B and Squad 51 you are both correct, Staff 10 used to be the driver for Battalion 1 (now called Deputy 1).Their duties involve a lot of admin. staffing duties such as hiring people for overtime, etc., At fire scenes they will assist the incidentcommander with the passport system, talk on the radio, etc.
Back in the late 90's, Battalion 1 was eliminated due to budget cuts and the driver position still exsisted so they called them Staff 10 as theyare located at Headquarters (Station 10).
Then post 9-11, SFD managed to get Battalion 1 back which was changed to Deputy 1 and the driver no longer drives for him, so they both head out of Station 10 when going to a fire or major incident in their own suburbans, sounds kind of silly. I don't know why they didn't join them back up when the position was added back but the only advantage is that they can each do their own things when not on runs, I guess.

Staff 10 is just a firefighter from Station 10, usually the same person does it every shift and someone else fills in for them when they are off. They are also a member of Unit 77, the Haz Mat Team.
