"U.S. Army soldiers assigned to 51st Signal Battalion, Charlie Company, set up a Troposcatter Spherical System during an exercise March 30 at Outlying Field Coupeville on Whidbey Island. Charlie Company utilized OLF Coupeville for a communication training exercise in cooperation with Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. The system uses microwave radio signals over short distances for communication, and was being tested here over a body of water. "It shoots radio signals up at the sky and it bounces off the troposphere and scatters,” said Army 1st Sgt. Larry Jones in a press release. “On the distant end there is another system exactly like it receiving that signal." The March 30 exercise had a theme of a humanitarian relief effort. Learn more HERE. Well. I drove past the OLF on Wed, when this was going on. Should have stopped and tried to see something from the road. The OLF looks a lot 'busier' than I remember it in past years.
