Does this mean they're switching to NXDN or P25??? I don't get how "switching radios" can suddenly improve your reception unless they're switching modes.

The NX-5200 is VHF only from 136-174 but can do NXDN, P25 or Analog.

They built a new NXDN system from the ground up. By using NX-5200, they got federal grand money because they are P25 capable. The general public doesn't understand nor care about radios systems or spectrum. They pay taxes and they want to see a shiny new radio because that's all that they care to understand. Plus a new radio looks better on TV than a building full of repeaters and networking switches. It's kinda like how WSP came out with IWN. They showed the media their pretty new APX radios even though they were using the same VHF analog radio system.

You're assuming that the old radios were in 100% operating condition. The old portable radio equipment was 10-15 years old. They were forking over a thousands of dollars a month in site rent and fees for a "maintenance contract" and nothing was being maintained. There were portables with bad antennas, bad batteries etc. Replacing them with brand new radios with brand new batteries that hold a charge and brand new antennas that aren't broken inside will fix more things that you can imagine.

They don't have any sites that are NXDN capable...yet. They didn't get any federal grant money. Money was obtained from a local grant from a casino. It was paired with money that wasn't spent the previous year.

You're right. If frustrates me to death with end users that spend millions of dollars for radio equipment. This project for YSO will replace all of the portables, put new mobiles in 9 cars, make improvements at 4 sites and modifications to a very, very poorly designed RF system at dispatch; all for less than $300k. Tax payers in Yakima County should be happy that this will be completed without any tax increases.

How many APX radios can you buy with $300k?

NXDN radios in analog land. And to think the local LEOs are upset with WSP going P25. At least you can buy a P25 scanner.

So much for interoperability....But at least 9 cars will have new radios (out of how many in their fleet?).

How many bands do the 5200's work on again?

VHF for most of the county, 380 for the YTC, 800 for the Yakima 800 system, and UHF for the Committee for Downtown Yakima...

Besides, no one but Taco ever travels outside of Yakistan County?

ETA- Just remembered seeing APX7000 portables (UHF-1/800 split) at YTC back in May. Used on the 380 system and State-Ops 5. How would that work with VHF? (except maybe the new 8000 series...)

Figured that one out a long time ago...Thanks for nothing.

Yea, that's why we've only ever had 1...er... 2 meetings on this side of the mountains. Except for that time I met Rich at Miner's.

Spending that freshly printed federal $$$$$$. YTC has their own dispatch center. It's about gotta be a speed-dial in dispatch. YTC is more likely to interop with SunComm rather than the Sheriff's Office for fire stuff anyways.

I'm telling you man, you put up a VHF NXDN box at the same site as an existing VHF repeater and work them back and forth. It's amazing...Hell, program the NXDN box for mixed mode. Use the same duplexer, antenna, coax etc. and go between analog and NXDN. It's quite sweet.

The second one doesn't count. The only people that showed up were King County residents.

Pretty sure it was LTR trunking off Elephant Mtn. by the other Kenwood dealer who basically only sells TK-3173's.
