Post subject:  New Scanner?

Sorry for such a noob question, but I'm looking to buy a new scanner, however not sure what to get at this point. I used to frequent this forum quite a bit a few years ago, and I used to be more up to speed on what was out there, but I'm way behind the times now.

With rebanding, what implications will there be for what type of device to get?

Thanks, and appreciate any responses.

Chris

You should post what area you live in and what Systems you would like to monitor?

Oops, great point. I live in King County, and would primarily listen to agencies in the KC/VC and Seattle sub-systems.

Thanks!

No rebanding??? I thought that already occurred. All the radios at my workplace were completely replaced with all new models. I guess I don't understand.

The first infrastructure will reband in the 1st quarter of 2014.

Ah, I get it now. End user equipment was upgraded to make it "Rebanding" capable, then the actual process of rebanding will be phased in over time. Thanks for jogging my memory.

One more thing. When the actual rebanding occurs, what are the implications on scanning devices? If, as you say, part of the process begins in first quarter of 2014, then maybe it would be not so wise to purchase something now (when it may not work later on).

If you're trying to listen to a RB'd system and don't have a RB capable radio, you may not hear anything. It depends on the site.

You may also want to look at getting a P25 Phase II capable radio. Several of the big kids in the neighborhood are moving that direction.

Ah, by "big kids" you must be referring to the big kids within KC. In doing some quick research, it seems that the GRE PSR-800 is the only "P25 Phase II" capable scanner out there.

There are rumors in the Twittersphere that Whistler (the radar detector kings who bought up what was left of GRE) are considering a new Phase-2 capable scanner 1Q14 or so.

Not worth it, IMHO, since all I've heard is encryption encryption encryption coming down the pike.
