well there goes another agency to listen to. I'm pretty sure most will be encrypted. Will our terrain and various topography around the PNW handle this and continue to work well? Doubt it highly. They will soon wish they never went to digital. The "fear mongering" of the communications world continues..........

I think they'll likely keep open the dispatch channels but encrypt just about everything else. They'll probably have a few multi-op channels which one or two will be open. The question is will they be trunked or not.

My guess is an Oregon State Police like system with the VHF staying conventional P25 with all areas repeated and additional radios 700/800/UHF like the CHP has to interop with the cities. As far as Encry I have no clue.

Little birdy told me p25 vhf conventional but the story has a different idea.

Being realistic here, given their operational environments, what would be a good band for them to be in? VHF? Do they need trunking? Do they need APX radios? No, that's why LERN is patched into 800 systems. BUT, this is the State we're talking about here so I'm sure the possibilities are endless.

They have pondered this. Some of it comes down to the room they have and the room they'd need to house the equipment on the various sites.

Compared to dumping $40,000,000 of taxpayer money down a black hole, somehow I think room for lowband cavities at existing sites would be chump change.

Yep- totally agreed.

Just passing on the answer I got from him... These days extenders are advanced enough that you don't have to think about it when you pull up to a scene. I wonder if some of those making the decisions know that. Speaking of pac-rats I actually heard one being used out here the other day by a trooper for the first time in a long time...

Had to laugh at the idea of the WSP moving BACK to Low band VHF. --- LOL. That is where they first were located. Both 42.54 and 42.40 mhz. But there is a new problem for Low band. Digital -- And like the lower TV channels of 2 - 6 --- The noise is a new problem. It could work -- and the State still has a large investment in its Emergency Management CEMENT -- 45 hz radio system. I guess It might be workable.

Has anyone heard anything else about the upgrade? It's been about a month since I've seen any updates. Also, does anyone have an idea how long it will take before we start to see the new system?
