Then came the 'jerk and run' radios. This was when Kennewick painted their cars pastel colors blue, green, tan http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=rW ... +run&hl=en |

Oh yes. The good old days. Eggs were 55 cents a dozen and a pound of real butter was 60 cents. And 35.50 was in Megacycles -- not Megahertz. One base station and TWO police cars. WOW. Must not have been alot of crime in the city back in 1949. No crime -- and very few people living in Kennewick back in 1949. Back then every police car had a 6 or 7 foot antenna on the back bumper. Isn't a megacycle a big bike with only one wheel ?? |

I can remember getting on a Washington State Ferry back then. We were just behind a Washington State Patrol car with the long lowband antenna. He was directed to move into a lane on the ferry that had a low overhead. As he drove ahead his antenna smashed the first few florescent lamps on the ceiling. The patrolman stopped, got out, pulled the antenna down and slammed the top end of it in the car's door and continued to drive forward. :D |

Well, 1949, they had roughly 10,000 people, it jumped 427% since 1940 when it was just under 2,000. (now around 67,000) but they also had a walking beat where the night officer rattled every business door downtown. Crime was pretty sparse. You have to remember Richland was a closed govt city then and the other towns kept things to a dull roar. I wasn't around til the 60's and took two ride alongs in 71 (Dodge Polara)and 73.(Plymouth Fury III) OC Lincoln was a pretty good chief,(1951-1977) I think ahead of his time for the area. They had their own repeater on 155.61/155.31, as I remember and Richland and Pasco had theirs too. The Jerk and Runs were Mastr series and were really wide with a telescoping antenna and the squirrel cage open coil at the bottom of the 5/8 wave car antenna. I never found out if they were well liked but they were replaced later on with the GE MastrII black handhelds. They used pastel colored vehicles in the mid 70's when the image of white or black and white cars was being debated. I kind of liked the scheme, they still had the Vis-a-Bar lights but it took a few months to pick them out in traffic. I remember they ordered the white 1971 Polaras as did every other local dept on the State bid and got 3 more painted in brown as staff, det, and radar units and were quite effective. Benton County was a big AMC user and had the 401ci Matadors like LAPD, painted in light green with a white diagonal on the two doors. They were 155.67/154.815 and then flipped that pair in the mid 80's. |
