while scanning seattle and king county police frequencies lately, i've heard some officers request to be "put on a delay" of two or five minutes. does anyone know what they mean by that? thanks for the info. |

Response times are being looked at more and more these days. You will hear police and fire department units tell the dispatcher if they’re delayed for any reason. Departments are constantly looking at how long calls hold and how long it takes units to arrive once dispatched. Many police departments have been going through accreditation, and lots of fire departments are just starting. The accreditation process really makes departments look at them self’s and evaluate the service they provide. I believe this is why you’re hearing this more and more. However there could be other reasons also. |

In the fire service, "put on a delay" is used when we are training generally. It may take us a little extra time to load the aid car with the equipment we have taken off to train with. The same is true with the engine and equipment. This is done to allow the dispatching computer to use the delay to calculate which unit is closest to the incident for dispatch.
