VTS is the service provided by the coast guard called Vessel Traffic Service. This is kind of like Air Traffic Control, for airplanes, but for boats, on the water. It's run by the CG at their ops center down on the waterfront. Any boater can check in with them anytime to get updates on vessel traffic in their area. They do actually have radar, too. The service is most helpful - in the fog. I'm a boater and have actually used them in cases of restricted visibility. Especially - when your boat is in the desginated traffic lanes for the huge tankers. The last thing you want to do is run into a huge tanker in the fog, because you couldn't see them, and they didn't see you because your boat is too tiny to show up on their radar. I've come back from the San Juans before, and had to cross Rosario straight in the fog to get to Anacortes. The oil tankers plow right through there in any weather. If I hit one, I'd be dead but VTS can tell me if there's a tanker nearby if I call and ask. |
