When you say "the black tubular type things", are you referring to the feedline running up the tower? That's the "coax" that feeds the antennas. It's actually rigid or semi rigid hardline, here's a good pic that shows a cross section. ![]() Nice pics, BTW. It's nice to know I'm not the only guy that takes pictures of towers. When I'm driving and I happen see a unique or different tower or other radio site, my girlfriend knows what's coming. She just sighs and hands me the camera. |

It's actually rigid or semi rigid hardline... Yeah, that's the stuff. I see it on almost every tower, except for the ones that are cell only (but most of those aren't really towers--they're more like a steel lamp post). A sort of close up: ![]() But it looks like they travel all the way to the top: ![]() |

The first work platform used to be a great place to eat lunch. Super view. Too many rules now. |

(Those big lamp post thingies.) In the pic below, you can see how the feedline travels out of the equipment shelter, under the ice bridge and into the monopole. ![]() |

Damn, I remember driving up there many times, back in the day. That last few hundred feet was a bitch if it was raining. Nice pics! |

Hey, great job on the pics and the post! Thanks for posting all that, I've always been curious about it too and have thought about doing the same but just haven't had time. Plus my wife would think I'm crazy. I've always been curious who transmits from up there, versus Cougar or Tiger - and why different agencies choose one of those three peaks from the other? So I guess Squawk has most of the government sites, Cougar is mostly FM, and Tiger has TV stations? Does anybody know? I also thought KHB60 162.55 (NWS) moved from Squawk to Cougar awhile ago? (I think due to interference with WSP but I can't remember?) Very interesting! Thanks again for the pics. |

There's no AM or FM broacast on Squak. If you want to see who's on Tiger VS Cougar check out Radio-Locator.com. Tiger has most of the "big boys". Tiger's definitely the tallest, which is why FMB is up there. I don't know about TV though. If you want to see who's on which mountains, do a Geosearch on ULS. |

Now, it's only because I'm a true broadcast radio geek that I had this page bookmarked! http://www.fybush.com/sites/2007/site-070504.html Enjoy the tour of the FM broadcast sites. |

woah thats cool, so at the bottom of the page is a picture of "upstairs" combiners? so that copper tube what runs in that? is that the actual RF jacket? or is that the shield for the wire? i imagine those are large amps, and there are 20+ of them, how much power in coming out the far end? and how do they work on them? do they have a spare tower site they turn up to do maintenance's? i dont imagine you can just wonder around in that room. |
