The otherday I heard a Seattle FD engine company call for what I believe was a C and C. Later transmissions seemed to indicate that the patient was deceased and a chaplin was enroute.

What does the C and C mean? Is it something like coroner and chaplin or something else?

It seems to me this was in the Ballard and Crown Hill area.

"C and C" stands for "Cops and Coroner". This is usually the call for an obvious, non-viable death.

It's kind of a misnomer, because the SFD dispatch doesn't actually call the KC Coroner. SPD actually gets there first and then determines if the coroner is needed at all. Often times when a death is expected or the circumstances clearly point to a potential cause of death, the coroner doesn't even come out.

The coroner and the cops discuss the case over the phone and then make a determination. If there is too many unknowns, the medical examiners office will "snatch" the body and perform an autopsy.

On the flip side, if the deceased patients family has funeral arrangements or plans to, the medical examiners office will release the body to a funeral home. The medical examiner will issue a release number (called an "NJD" number--I think) that essentailly releases the body.

I think what you heard on Seattle Fire was actually a P, C, and C (Police, Coroner, and Chaplin) request. This slandered procedure when a patient is pronounced deceased. In any event the police upon arival will standy the at location, until the body of the deceased is removed by either the medical examiner or a funeral home, thus asllowing the fire unites go back in service. And if necessary (i.e too many unknowns or an obvious crime seine) conduct an investagation of the death.
