I've been meaning to post this for a couple of days. I actually heard one of our own SFD staff use this term on the radio.

Now you guys all probably knew what it meant as soon as you read the above topic, but I had no idea when it came over the scanner!

What the firefighter said was something like, "We're having difficulty getting access to the second floor. This is a Collyers Mansion." I assumed it was some historic building that was on fire and immediately did a Google search on "Collyers Mansion." When I finally figured out what the phrase meant, I was excited because I have an old book about hermits and recluses, and it has a whole section on the Collyer brothers.

The house, by the way, was somewhere on or near Aurora and 38th. Very close, I believe, to a firehouse.

More info on the phrase "Collyers Mansion Conditions" can be found here:

Jeeze I'm such a geek! ;-)

here are some pictures of the collyer's place, we have used many terms to describe places like this, i have not heard collyers mansion used since moving from colorado, it would have been interesting to have intercepted SFD's radio traffic on that situation, if you want some interesting reading on the collyer brothers check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collyer_brothers they even have a picture of langley collyer which i did not have enough room to post.

Thanks Eric & Firedawg.

Gotta love that Wikipedia!

The psychology of hermits, hoarders et al is just fascinating. Hoarding isn't really collecting so much as it's fear of throwing away something that might turn out to be important. It's a compulsive behavior related to anxiety disorders. Very strange.

I can't even begin to imagine the nightmare a burning Collyer's Mansion would be for firefighters. Right up there with crazy cat ladies. Worse, even, I'm guessing.

I think that's a chandelier or something similar.

i'd have to agree with taco, it does look like a chandelier (watch your head), we have to remember though they had it stacked from top to bottom, so there is no telling where the floor is exactly

I agree that that is what is in the third pic, but I'm still not sure about that first pic! Look at the doorway, which appears to be about an 8 ft. door with a 9 ft. ceiling! And the shaft on that supposed "chandelier" looks to be about 2 - 3 ft. long! I still vote for "floor lamp mounted to the ceiling"!... ..... Given the rest of the junk piled up in there and as eccentric (sp?) as they appeared to be, it's probable that anything was possible!!! :)

Those Pictures are of the Law Offices of William L. Zawila and Associates of Garden Grove, California, 92840. Boxes include 78 and 33 rpm records, 15 inch tape reels, and other non-usable broadcast gear from KKFO AM in Coalinga, Califonia. LOL LOL LOL
