Does anyone know what the "King" designator (such as "King 343") is when used by WSP? I used to think that this was the Commercial Enforcement (truck scales, etc.) officers but the other day I heard a King unit involved in a drug and weapons arrest. I suppose that this could have happened as a result of a truck related traffic stop but I'm not so sure.

Also, any idea what the clearing codes are? So far I have deduced that "Adam" either means an arrest or citation and I think that "Charlie" means that just a warning was given. Can anyone elaborate on these codes?

A- is for notice of infraction. If you notice, if the NOI is issued and meets the "aggressive" criteria, then the troop with clear "Clear, A-Adam aggressive" or something essentially similar

Flatfoot,

Thank you for the informative answer.

Speaking of aggressive driving, a coworker and I were driving home from Bremerton one afternoon on Highway 16. We were traveling about the speed limit in the number two lane when we noticed a small foreign car pass us along the shoulder at about 95 MPH. Before long, another small car zipped right by, also on the shoulder. These two guys were apparently playing cat and mouse or racing.

About 30 seconds later, an unmarked car (plain plates) with red and blue dash lights and wig wags passed by us, and one at a time, got behind each of the violators and got them to pull over. The officer then slowed down in front of us, and waved for us to pull over.

When everyone was stopped, the officer (now identifable as a WSP Trooper) ran up to the first car, yanked the driver out of the car, handcuffed him, and placed him in the back of the patrol car. The Trooper then went to the second car, and detained the driver in a similar manner.

The Trooper then started walking back for our car. (I was thinking, gee, I sure hope he is out of handcuffs by now...:). But fortunately, he just wanted to ask us if we saw the aggressive driving incident and asked us for our names and numbers (in case he needed witnesses I guess).

The whole thing made quite an impression on me for a couple of reasons. First, it is amazing to me that a single Trooper can stop three cars at the same time. Secondly, the Trooper seemed genuinely angry at the violators - not the calm, cool WSP behavior that you typically observe.

I'm glad that these guys got caught. I sure hope that they get more than just a speeding ticket.

Another term used by WSP -

"Mary" units are motorcycle units. We had them here in Moses Lake/Ephrata for 2 years, then were taken away to Bremerton.

Another term came to mind -

"X" units are used by both techs and weigh masters. At least here in District 6 (Moses Lake/Ephrata/Wenatchee) if the unit is using a 2 digit sign in (example - X-31) then he is a radio tech. X-885 would be a weigh master.

I'm sure it is the same throughout the state.

BTW, talked to WSP 1116 here the other day and apparently they have decided against new troopers getting higher and higher numbers, they are starting to fill in the lower numbers as troopers retire or leave the WSP. My thoughts were confirmed as a new recruit was assigned # 533 and he is stationed here in Moses Lake. We also have a trooper who is a pilot and runs the aircraft for this area. His number 426. Been with state for over 20 years.

Up until about a year ago #350 was used by a 20+ yr veteran of the department who has now retired from WSP and currently works for the King County Sheriff patrolling one of the contract cities.

The #350 has already been re-issued and is in use by a District 7 Trooper.

One would think that re-issued numbered Troopers might not be assigned to the same District as the previous holder of that number but there are several in District 2 and 7.

#787 is another one that comes to mind.
That is the number that former Trooper John Lovik had.
He is now a State Rep. for Legislative District 44.
He actually has his old green-on-white plate on the wall of his office.

Another example of a number being reissued. Probably the Best/Worst number ever issued...

666 was assigned to Ray Granger in Moses Lake. He retired in 2002 and has since passed away. His number is now being used by a trooper in Ritzville. As you are well aware Moses Lake is District 6 and Ritzville is District 4.

A story Granger told me (we were good friends) was that when he announced his retirement he had troopers asking from all over trying to get his number. He was a great guy!

I was informed by troop 355 that WSP does recycle numbers, but I believe a number is retired if that troop is killed in line of duty.

WSP numbering system: Unit 1, Governor, Unit/car 2, WSP Chief, 3 - 60 Command Staff Officers. Units 61 to 199 are Field Supervisors (Lieutenants & Sergeants). 200 and above are Patrol Troopers.

Don't forget the cadets! 4 digits starting with a 7, i.e. 7XXX
