From another board

"the bulk of the Puget Sound Area Public Safety Systems have converted to 800, as of about 5 years ago. Even the dinky PDs, such as Snoqualmie, Carnation, Fall City, Isaquah, etc. have upgraded to 800 MHz Trunked. And, they have more recently gradually begun to upgrade to P25 IMBE, and they plan to be fully converted to P25 by the end of next year. As they uplift their 800 Trunked analog FM systems to P25 digital, they will simultaneously implement DES-OFB, so good bye scanners. In fact, some sectors in the North End have already started going P25, with DES-OFB. There was a huge article on this in a recent Seattle Times article. It was quite extensive, and very detailed. Looked like a radio tec either wrote the article, or was well interviewed by the reporter"

I would say that individual probably doesn't know jack diddly.....

But if he's right, it means I get a new XTS-5000.

And I get a whole bunch of other new toys.

Wiz,

If it's on the web, it must be true....

I agree about this individuals "knowledge."

I attended a Ham club some time back where the speaker was discussing the 01 e'quake. He didn't know very much factual information about the system or the quake, so he filled in the holes with his immagination. Wow! What a story- too bad most of it was not based in fact or reality. They ran out of time, so I did not have a chance to "put it straight." The point is know your source, and know how to confirm. There are a couple of sources on this board you can trust.

Don't hold your breath for new toys, Sean. Unless you believe in The Great Pumpkin!

Good...times...

Well don't throw all hope out the window. When King switched to 800 they thought they'd beaten the scanner...RadioShack released an 800 trunk scanner same day, or so the story goes....

Not exactly true.

When the King County Regional Radio System was built, we made available to the Media and Citizens MTS2000 and Spectra radios at our cost precisely because we knew there were no scanning options at the time.

I know this to be a fact because I brought the subject up during concept and system design discussions, and made the original arument to find a way to make the radios available.

Not too long (a year or so, I think- but don't remember) Uniden came out with their first TT scanner. We (City of Seattle) then started recommending citezens buy the scanner as a cheaper alternative to the expensive MTS2000.

King County SO even bought scanners for some specialty units. I can program with the best of them. Nothing to hide here. Unless it's encrypted....

Yeah, Microsoft had the same frame of mind and look at them now. 3/4 of the source code is out now and its only a matter of time.......

Where there's a will; There's a way.....be safe

I forgot the quote thingy

While the LAPD has gone P25 digital, all Law enforcement in Orange County, California has gone ENCRYPTED. Most likely to protect Mickey and his friends from being bombed or kidnapped. The media continues to follow LAPD around and broadcast almost daily any car chase that occurs. The LAPD Chief of Police wanted to go ENCRYPTED but was BLOCKED by the media going to the new mayor. The MEDIA has taken Orange County to court and has now found a reason to BEAT UP the OC Sheriff as well as the Under-Sheriff. The SON of the Under-Sheriff will soon go on trial for RAPE. The DA is investigating the Sheriffs Dept in regards to this and why the SON was not charged or named - PRIOR to the medias attention. Seattle has GREAT SUPPORT from the media. IF - they were locked out - heads would roll. The media did just that back in 1970. The Chief of Police and the King County Sheriff and a few others all went to JAIL. THE MEDIA was running the show then. Everytime the economy goes BAD - it brings along FEAR and PANIC. Its to give media a scare and to tell them to lay off. There were no WMD. Who will pay for the new radios? Where is the money going to come from?? If Seattle or King County or Tacoma all get NEW radios now -- how will they be able to buy NEW radios in 2008 for the 700 Mhz band ??? Look at California. Its BROKE. 800 mhz in Puget Sound has only happened BECAUSE of the MEDIAs support and endorcement of BONDS. NO MONEY - NO RADIOS.

So, MTM, is there a point to all the rambling? If so, I sure missed it.

Tacoma just got all new radios. I am not aware of ANY discussions of KC or Seattle going 700 in '08.

WMD? What does WMD have to do with this discussion thread? But then I don't underrstand how LAPD relates either.

:D :D Mr. Wiz, As you yourself pointed out - the Media must be involed or encluded in any such change over. If the MEDIA can not listen in - it is NOT going to happen. Freedom of the press to view and report what local government is doing is a must. Any attempt at FULL ENCRYPTION of normial Police, Fire or EMS operations would be taken to court. The Media supported the Bond Issues that supplyed the money to build the existing Puget Sound 800 Mhz trunked systems. While the FEDS want total security - they are also pushing "Interoperability". The FCC is PUSHING the new 700 Mhz band as a way to support those needs. There is a lot of TALK -- but NO MONEY - Nor support for any new "ENCODED" radio systems. It appears that Snohomish County felt that there was NOT a great NEED to ENCRYPT all or most of the new 800 mhz system. Seattle Police LIKE the public that they serve. Take away the publics scanners and the public will soon loose interest and support for Public Safety. Bottom line: ITS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.

Post subject:  Your Sunday morning sermon

I'd like to have a moment of slience for our brothers and sisters in Vancouver BC, who must have a really weak 'fourth estate' as the reigon's fire and police communications are all encrypted. Folks, it's really sad. I have a friend up there that listens to nothing but the digital hiss on the input frequencys, just to know when something is going on in his area - like the good old days (spelled ANALOG). Now lets all pray for them......
