if you haven't used a new scanner in a while for sure get the 396 while its cheap..

If you have you will LOVE the fact that they finally put sites into the HT's

AKA if you have a 996 or a 15 and love the way it works the 996 will piss you off. get the X if you arnt a nerd and don't care buy the cheap one.

Didn't the digital decoding improve with the X?

Per Uniden, yes. Per users, well, that's somewhat of a debate right now.
