Say, I've been seeing this broomstick on the top of the traffic lights at SR 204 and SR9. Also another one at Lundeen PArk and SR9. What are they for? Here's a link to a foto of the ons at 9 and 204: http://www.messecar.us/valhallatreefarm ... ntenna.jpg
Ideas, anybody?

If you have "close call" or "signal stalker", just park and listen for something.

The two main types or reasons for antennas on traffic signals or light poles are (1) traffic control of the lights by emergency vehicles, and (2) wireless operations. The antennas are receive -- not transmit.

I doubt they're used for preemption in this case. You can see the Opticom sensors to the right of the antenna.

Now I'm curious...

I spoke with a DOT Signal Tech about this and he advises that is the "old" type of intersection camera signal antenna.
He advises that most camera equipment nowadays is utilizing ethernet connections. He did not know what frequencies those antennas were configured for, but a scan of the FCC.gov "Gen Men" reports would probably reveal freqs licensed to the state in a specific area. Might be worth a try if your bored, . . . Go to FCC.gov and then select "search". Scroll down to "Gen Men" (General Menu) and begin your query.
