So, over the past few days, I took a WHOLE bunch of taxi rides for work reasons. I noticed that, while Farwest Taxi (KOA316) does all of their dispatching/position reporting/status updates via MDT, they still have voice microphones in their cars, down near the floor. One of the drivers told me it was for emergencies.

Any clues?

I've seen taxi like you describe in Toronto. It was actually connected to a PA on the outside of the car strangely enough. Their dispatch was done actually via SMS.
