I'm hurt. No one has even mentioned how good the coverage was. The mall ownership ponied up an obscence amount of money for a Distributed Antenna Network in the facility last summer. Not only does it carry all of the Public Safety traffic, it also carries many of the wireless carries. The mall and the city should be commended for looking forward. Radio coverage was not an issue.

I guess that's pretty good - compared to the "obscenely rich" Eastside (Read: EPSCA), where we are still told that the "system was designed for 95% street level coverage using a 3 watt portable radio held up to head level".

Just try and get decent, reliable coverage inside Bellevue Square Mall (or an older hi-rise, or a newer school)...it's still a difficult proposition. During a bank robbery shooting in 2000, a patrol supervisor had to walk 75 feet from the shooting scene to get radio coverage and provide updates to the dispatch center. After 8 years, has that been remedied? Nope.

In other words - don't expect in-building coverage, because the system wasn't designed to do that. If you do get in-building coverage, then that's a bonus.

Swell.

...and they found him! The Shooter was found in a Portland Holiday Inn.

Washington Square Mall here in Tigard, OR has a repeater that I can even hear from my house a good 7 miles away. From what I understand, the repeater is on the West Hills because apparently a repeater on the roof was "not good enough" to the head of security.

We need more guys like that. I'm assuming this is the correct license, but I see it up by Ridgefield, WA...?

They used to be around 151mhz simplex in the early 80's. Drove early 80's Malibu cars with red light bars. They wore police style uniforms and carried sidearms. Don't know if they still do.

Thats the one but thats odd the coordinates show up in Ridgefield, WA. Though they are setup for a 50 mile radius around Porltand for some retarded reason.

And I should say the FORMER Head of Security. The guy retired in 2005 as I understand who wanted a better radio system when the mall got added on and renovated. The current security head is a grade A asshole.

And yes, they DID have a VHF system. When the mall had a huge renovation, they went to a UHF system with a DPL actually. My understanding is that some security officers have sidearms but not all.

Which Southcenter Mall channel was the best ? 451.5625 R or 462.1125 R ??? Both are only licensed for 3 watts. As far as Washington Square -- in Oregon, They are still licensed to use 151.835 -- as a repeater and 452.3625 R as well. You may be thinking of the Meier & Frank operations -- which has several area mall stations -- WPQH-862. They have 4 different mall sites around the Portland area. The Washington Square station is located "on site" -- not any where "off site". ( WQDN-376 ).

You run all sorts of RF cable and Fiber optic to a gazillion antennas inside a building. It's all fed from a donor site. The most basic form of this is a BiDirectional Amplifier. Sometimes you'll find networks that carry multiband as well as multi format. Pretty cool stuff.

Another 'gun free zone' success story...

That's for another thread though..
