I'm hurt. No one has even mentioned how good the coverage was. The mall ownership ponied up an obscence amount of money for a Distributed Antenna Network in the facility last summer. Not only does it carry all of the Public Safety traffic, it also carries many of the wireless carries. The mall and the city should be commended for looking forward. Radio coverage was not an issue.
I guess that's pretty good - compared to the "obscenely rich" Eastside (Read: EPSCA), where we are still told that the "system was designed for 95% street level coverage using a 3 watt portable radio held up to head level".
Just try and get decent, reliable coverage inside Bellevue Square Mall (or an older hi-rise, or a newer school)...it's still a difficult proposition. During a bank robbery shooting in 2000, a patrol supervisor had to walk 75 feet from the shooting scene to get radio coverage and provide updates to the dispatch center. After 8 years, has that been remedied? Nope.
In other words - don't expect in-building coverage, because the system wasn't designed to do that. If you do get in-building coverage, then that's a bonus.
Swell.
