I have a friend who, like Johnny, spent the first years after high school in Japan with the Army (60-62). His job was to receive encoded messages in Morse and pass them along to the intelligence officers who would decode the message. He could copy 40 WPM into a typewriter. Hasn't decoded a message since leaving the Army in 1962. I had never heard what his job had been in the Army and have known him almost 50 years. For some reason, we got talking about the types of 'language' used with text messaging and its similarity with Morse Code shorthand. Interesting stuff out there. |
