If it's not one thing with EBAY, it's another. I just received this email: (the names have been changed to protect the indecent)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Sucker

You recently listed the following listing: (well written, bravo)

############ - U.S. Military M17 Gas Mask. (a weapon of mass destruction, don't cha know)

Unfortunately, we had to remove your listing because of the following:

We do not allow the listing of certain military items on our site. For this specific item, >>>>>we received a request directly from the United States Department of Defense to have it removed.<<<<<<< (BULLSHIT!... Sorry, I have a bit of a cold)

You can email the DoD directly through the Joint Equipment Assessment Program (JEAP) at SMBLOGCOMJEAP@usmc.mil to learn more about this removal. (what if I don't have outbound email available???? Didn't think of that, did you)

Please do not relist this item. (what are you going to do, shoot tear gas canisters into my house? Remember, I'm the one with the gas mask)

All associated fees have been credited back to your account. (aww, you just gave me a warm fuzzy)

Because of various laws and regulations on the sale of weapons, most types of weapons can't be listed on eBay.

We don't allow listings for military ordnance such as weapons, ammunition, equipment, vehicles, and their related parts. Our policy also applies to things that are considered demilitarized, demilled, or unserviceable because we can't confirm whether the items have been changed in ways that would make them safe and legal to sell and transport.

(thank God that easily modified radios don't fall under this rule)

Here's more information on our policy:
http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/military-items.html
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are several hundred gas masks listed on Ebay right now, several hundred have recently been sold. Apparently they don't like me. Anyways.... does anyone want to buy an unissued M17 gas mask, with accessories? $20 shipped to your door.

-Marcus

The M17 is long discontinued, and the filters contain chemicals which can actually be harmful...

Why 'the military' would ask to cancel your auction is beyond me... I see the brand new M50's on there regularly, and those are current issue...

A FOIA is not worth the effort. Still annoying though.

Yeah they have a long history of fraud. For the uninformed masses, here are two tips about paypal:

(1) As a buyer, NEVER give them your bank account number. Only use credit cards, that way you can easily reverse the charge if they try to rip you off.

(2) As a seller, immediately request a check from them and only ship an item after the check clears your bank. Do not use them for credit card merchant services. A common form of fraud they engage in is allowing a purchaser to rescind a transaction after you have already shipped an item.

I've never had an issue with PayPal and I have been with them since dirt.

I have a problem with sites like PayPalSucks and the others because I noticed a lot of the stories involve transactions over $1000.00 or so. Okay, if you are throwing that amount of money around, you might want to look into an escrow service....

...or an actual credit card merchant processor whose fees aren't as high as PayPal's

At least you got your money back. PayPal just told me I'm out nearly $200 because some buyer claimed he didn't get the item. For all I know, he's using it right now and nobody scanned it as delivered so PayPal automatically sided with him.

My personal policy is that when selling, anything over $50 I get the USPS insurance plus signature confirmation so it deters issues like that from the buyer. I had one person try to pull a fast one on me saying they never got the item but I had a signature of him signing it and he had to go to the post office to get it in his case.

When you can get signatures on international delivery, I'll be the first to sign up :)

For international, I only allow USPS Priority Mail for Canada for that very reason. And even then, its return receipt plus insurance. Every other country I only do FedEx.
