Its been an interesting few days. While I am used to seeing CH47's and CH53's on occasion, I had a V22 Osprey buzz the house Monday afternoon and today I saw this strange looking bird flying around with a Huey. Any idea what this thing is ? (note the fins along the aft fuselage). It appeared to have some weaponry/instrumentation attached to hardpoints. Unlike the Huey it was very thin and narrow. Sorry about the photo quality. This happened rather quickly so I grabbed the nearest camera. Attachment: h3.jpg [ 27.13 KiB | Viewed 1891 times ] Attachment: h2.jpg [ 45.5 KiB | Viewed 1891 times ] |

Sean wrote: Marine Cobra? Looks like a twin engine.. I think you're right. The AH-1W Super Cobras I'm used to seeing don't have those funky looking "fins" that you see from the bottom side, however there appears to be a "turned exhaust" upgrade out now. Perhaps this explains the difference in appearance. http://www.navair.navy.mil/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.PrintNewsStory&id=2771 |

Definitely a Cobra. :) I had the pleasure of riding in a Bell 430 a few years ago. Amazing experience... |

Had another fun one today. Most outbound traffic from VNY departs south then turns east over Sherman Oaks/Beverly Hills so I faintly hear the larger aircraft. Today I heard something much louder than the usual Gulfstreams so a quick peek out the door revealed a 727. Somewhat a rare sight today as I thought the only 727 operator was FedEx and I don't remember them operating out of VNY. So on with the radio and I hear "VOODOO 1" on the departure freq. Apparently its a Raytheon rig with a fighter jet nose for testing avionics. http://www.flickr.com/photos/bobsjets/2210325457/ ..and I set this plane gets around. And around. And around. Literally. http://flightaware.com/live/flight/VOODOO1/history/20090417/1603Z/KLAX/KLAX |
