Just received a message about some Anti-Obama Signs that are posted along interstate 5 - near Chehalis. The message says that the Federal Government has demanded that the WS-DOT take down the signs or loose federal tax money. The message also claims that Washington State told the Feds to - F-Off and that they will drop out of being part of the US. What's the REAL STORY ????

WHAT??? The Soviet of Washington part of the United States of America :?  :bowrofl:

Methinks I am familiar with the billboard in question... Only problem is its on private land    so nothing the "state" could do about it anyway... Unless something new has popped up since Thanksgiving last....................................................

And from whom did this message originate :?: :?: :?:

Hamilton Farms billboard
a.k.a. "Redneck Billboard"

Was located on the west side of I-5, several miles north of current location, up through early to mid 90's.
Disappeared for a while.

Reappeared in current location on east side of I-5 near an exit, can't remember the exit number (low 70's).

Likely, the message you received is either fiction or blown way out of proportion, particularly given the source.

I can tell you this, Washington has (or had) a law on it's books regarding ownership + placement of signs near freeways. I couldn't find it on a quick search, but my recollection is that, signs "advertising a business" - which could be in billboard form but skirt "billboard" specific requirements (which I think is what they are doing) are legal, but must be placed on the property of the business or within a certain proximity.

Obviously the truth behind this letter would require some research, but the removal (now many years ago) and replacement several miles south was related to the law that required the businesses sign to be located on the property of the business.

Again, given the source of your letter, I would find it plausible that they were taking a nearly 20 year old case, that has since been resolved (the anti-Obama messages were up 2 weeks ago when I drove by) and regurgitating it for political gain.

To be fair, this sign does much more than place anti-Obama messages. I first saw the redneck billboard in 1980 when I began travels south, and the tone of the messages has never changed. They used to be a lot funnier, even tho I rarely agreed with the message. Lately they have become almost incomprehensible.

I am guessing the owner-author is aging, and his/her rants in person are likely just as incomprehensible :o

I think Al Hamilton died some time ago spending his time and fortune out of state. It used to say "Hamilton Farms" at the bottom of the sign, when it was located about MP80 but now at exit 72, just has a message and I believe is unlit at night per the new location and agreement. He and another local timber baron now defunct used to sponsor the local John Birch American Opinion book store.

This might of interest:

Basically, it sounds like if USDOT feels that Washington State isn't doing their job by controlling advertising, they can take away 10% of federal funding.

However, in this case, as long as the signs are 660 feet from the highway, your OK!
