This is when I wish I had HF capabilities.

Spud,

You won't hear much until early AM hours (usually about 1am) -- when we get decent propagation. The transmissions from JSDF and SAR operations are in Japanese. I've been monitoring since the whole thing started and while there are some frequencies to watch it's not much fun unless you can decipher the Japanese.

In the first few days, the main audio was mostly from aircraft giving their position reports, etc. (JSDF A/C were flying around the Fukushima area.) We did hear what were believed to be SAR operations -- but it wasn't very exciting.

AFAIK, no US Military comms have been heard from there directly. (A few USCG and USAF flights have been heard leaving the region but nothing directly related.)

Freqs to monitor:

JSDF: 6727, 6742, 6745, 6751 and possibly 11208 USB
SAR: 5680, 5690, 5708

I've moved on to monitoring the NATO forces around Libya since the primary language is English.
